Jason Thomas is a 25 year-old singer/songwriter/performer from Lewistown, PA, who draws influence and inspiration from the diverse sounds of U2, Pearl Jam, The Verve, Ben Harper, R.E.M, Live, and the Foo Fighters. Originally from Lewistown, Thomas began performing solo acoustic shows at age 17, making his debut in August 1997 at Lexie's Cafe in downtown Lewistown, opening for successful acoustic rocker Rhyne McCormick. He spent the rest of the year opening for McCormick, before taking over the headlining spot when McCormick decided to pursue music full-time in south-central Pennsylvania. Standing-room only crowds greeted his Lexie's shows and despite a raw and under-developed sound, it was very apparent to all those that saw these early shows that Jason had a knack for writing emotional, hook-filled songs that immediately connected with the audience. In June 1998, he put together a band for a performance at a Habitat for Humanity benefit concert in Reedsville, sharing the bill with Rhyne McCormick, The Jellybricks, The Tony Perry 3 and Foxxy.
After graduating from high school in June 1998, Thomas moved to Altoona to attend the Altoona campus of Penn State University and it wasn't long before the area discovered his ever-growing musical talent. After playing at an open-mic night in September 1998, Thomas was offered a regular gig at Cool Beans, a downtown Altoona coffeeshop popular with area students. The crowds quickly took to Jason, and these shows began to shape him into the emotionally-charged songwriter and performer that you see and hear on stage today.
In 2000, after a year off to focus on school, Jason returned to playing live, playing two stunning sets over two consecutive nights in September at the Daily Grind in Altoona and at Cool Beans Coffee and Tea in Bellefonte. Clearly, Jason had matured immensely as a songwriter and his singing had risen to a level never before imagined. He returned to these venues several times in late 2000 and early 2001, and also began making regular stops at the Espressery coffeeshop on Penn States University Park campus, as well as several other area venues. His performances at the Espressery drew enough attention to garner a feature story in The Daily Collegian, Penn State's student newspaper. After graduating from Penn State in May 2002, Jason began playing regularly at Lewistown area hotspots J.P. Edwards and The Waterfront Tavern, as well as wowing State College-area fans at Open Mic nights at Bar Bleu, The Phyrst, and The Darkhorse Tavern, where he was voted “Best Performer of the Night” by bar patrons at each of his first two performances there. Since then, he has continued to impress audiences at new venues throughout Central PA, including Mangos Tropical Cafe in Williamsport, the Hublersburg Inn in Howard, and Johnny's Bar in Huntingdon.
In January 2005, Jason released his debut album, Leave the Bliss Behind. The culmination of nearly two years of work, the album was recorded at Stonehouse Studios in Jamestown, NY and produced by Mike Bratt. The album features 11 outstanding tracks written by Jason and accompanied by a fantastic cast of supporting musicians, including Bratt and former 10,000 Maniacs drummer Jim Foti. With one album under his belt, two new projects in the works, and a continually evolving live show that The Pennsylvania Musician has called “passionate,” “strong,” and “thoughtful,” 2005 may just be the year that the name Jason Thomas becomes a household name in the Central Pennsylvania music scene.
